About Me

I am the elder (and only surviving son) of TSgt. Walter Junior Hoover and Mary White Hoover. My dad was the crew chief on the R4Q-1 that crashed on 7 FEB 1951 near Eastville, VA. (Machipongo). It was not his plane or flight, but he rounded up some of his own crew and buddies to fly for a crew chief whose wife was in lobor. I have visited the site twice (1982 and 1983) and talked with the widow of the man who pulled the first bodies from the aircraft. She gave me a local newspaper of the incident and allowed me to collect metal from the aircraft. She related how for years after the Navy crew had cleaned up the site that they still had flat tires on tractors, lawn mowers and other vehicles. I placed a wreath in the water in honor of the crew. I was wondering if you could put me in contact with other family of those killed. Any other information would be appreciated. My address is POB 993, Brush Prairie, WA 98606 and my home phone is 360-896-8628. Cell is 360-921-7840. Thank you for allowing me to join your page and for the work you have done, Merry Christmas to you and yours. Steve Hoover (p.s. My oldest son, Ben, Walt's grandson, is a 2011 graduate of USNA).
